    Alaska Homeschool Graduation Requirements

What homeschool families in Alaska need to know about notification, recordkeeping, who issues the diploma, and how parent-issued diplomas are recognized.

    6 min read

Alaska has one of the least regulated homeschool environments in the country. Parents may homeschool simply by exercising the home-school exemption in the compulsory attendance statute, with no notification, testing, or recordkeeping required by the state.

Alaska's home-school exemption is codified at Alaska Statute §14.30.010(b)(12). Families also have the option of enrolling in a state-correspondence program. The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development publishes information on both pathways.

    Notification & registration

Families using the §14.30.010(b)(12) home-school exemption are not required to notify the state or local district. Families who enroll in a state-correspondence program register through that program and follow its requirements.

    Recordkeeping

Alaska does not impose state recordkeeping or testing requirements on §14.30.010(b)(12) homeschoolers. Families typically keep their own attendance records, work samples, and a transcript at the high school level. Correspondence program students follow the program's recordkeeping rules.

    Graduation requirements

The state does not set graduation requirements for §14.30.010(b)(12) homeschoolers; the parent determines completion. Correspondence program students complete the program's graduation requirements.

    Who issues the diploma

The parent operating the homeschool issues the diploma in the name of the family's program. Correspondence program students typically receive a diploma from the correspondence program.

    College & military recognition

University of Alaska campuses and other Alaska postsecondary institutions admit homeschool graduates routinely with a transcript, the diploma, and standardized test scores. Homeschool graduates qualify for Tier 1 military enlistment under current DoD policy.
