    Oregon Homeschool Graduation Requirements

What homeschool families in Oregon need to know about notification, recordkeeping, who issues the diploma, and how parent-issued diplomas are recognized.

    6 min read

Oregon homeschool families notify the local Education Service District (ESD) once per child and then administer periodic standardized assessments. The parent issues the diploma.

Home schooling is governed by Oregon Revised Statutes §339.030 and §339.035 and OAR Chapter 581, Division 21. The Oregon Department of Education's Home School page publishes current rules and links to local ESDs.

    Notification & registration

Parents notify the local Education Service District in writing within 10 days of starting and again whenever the family moves to a new ESD's area. There is no annual re-notification requirement.

    Recordkeeping

Oregon requires students to take a state-approved standardized test administered by a qualified neutral party at the end of grades 3, 5, 8, and 10. Results are kept by the parent and submitted to the ESD on request. Other recordkeeping is not required.

    Graduation requirements

Oregon does not prescribe specific high school graduation requirements for home-schooled students. The parent determines completion. Aligning the transcript with Oregon public high school graduation requirements is a useful reference.

    Who issues the diploma

The parent operating the home school issues the diploma in the name of the family's home school.

    College & military recognition

Oregon's public universities (Oregon, Oregon State, Portland State and others) and the Oregon community colleges admit home-school graduates routinely. Homeschool graduates qualify for Tier 1 military enlistment under current DoD policy.
